First Canadian Black-Owned Scrub Brand Founded By a Nursing Student

I am a Canadian BScN nursing student and the founder of LaCura, the first Canadian Black-owned scrub brand created by a nursing student.

LaCura started because most scrubs were never made for us -students, Black women, natural hair, real bodies, or real 12-hour clinical shifts. They were expensive, boxy, rough, and never designed with comfort, curls, curves, or budgets in mind.

I wanted scrubs and jackets that reflect us: affordable, flattering, size-inclusive, hair-protective, and created by someone who actually wears them to clinicals.

How LaCura Began

During my clinical rotations, I kept asking the same questions:

               •             Why are good scrubs so expensive for students?

               •             Why don’t scrub caps protect our braids, wigs, silk presses, or natural hair?

               •             Why do jackets only say RN, RPN, but never Nursing Student or Future RN?

               •             Why don’t our uniforms look like us?

I began sketching designs between shifts and lectures. My elder sister, a skilled seamstress, sewed the first prototypes I designed. I tested them during clinicals, skills labs, and 5 a.m. hospital shifts. That’s how LaCura (“the cure”) became real.

What Makes LaCura Different

 1. Affordable – Made for Student Budgets

Healthcare uniforms shouldn’t cost your entire paycheck. LaCura keeps pricing accessible so students, PSWs, RPNs, RNs, and future nurses can afford quality without sacrificing groceries or tuition.

 2. Inclusive Sizing & Real Fit

We design for real bodies — not one body type.

✔ Sizes from XXS to 3XL (adjust to your actual range)

✔ Fits for petite, tall, curvy, modest, plus-size

✔ Stretch where you need it, no see-through fabric, no waist gap

 3. Satin-Lined Scrub Caps — And WHY They Matter

Most scrub caps are 100% cotton which dries out natural hair, causes frizz, breakage, and ruins silk presses or braids.

Our caps are fully satin-lined inside because:

               •             Protects braids, wigs, silk press, curls, coils, locs & edges

               •             Reduces breakage, dryness, and friction

               •             Keeps moisture in during long shifts

               •             Comfortable for sensitive scalps

               •             More hygienic & gentle than cotton-only caps

This was made for Black nurses, textured hair, and anyone who values healthy hair and professionalism.

 4. The LaCura Halo Fleece — Because Nursing Students Deserve Recognition Too

You’ll see jackets saying RN, RPN, or PSW, but almost never “Nursing Student” or “Future RN.” We study, cry, care, and show up at 5 a.m., yet we’re not represented.

So I created the LaCura Halo Fleece:

               •             Custom embroidery options: “Future RN,” “Future RPN,” “Nursing Student,” “BScN,” or your name

               •             Warm fleece interior for freezing hospital units & early clinical mornings

               •             Soft, stylish, and actually made for us

It’s more than a jacket, it’s identity, pride, and belonging.
